A Danish Flet Story
Flet — the Danish word for “to braid” or “to weave” — is more than a word to me. It’s a memory, a rhythm, and the essence of hygge. This cherished craft, traditionally made in the winter months leading up to the holidays, is about creating something beautiful from something simple — a quiet moment of joy, shaped by hand.
My story with this craft began in Denmark, where I was born and raised. I remember cold winter afternoons spent with family and friends, the soft glow of candles, and the scent of freshly baked cookies filling the room. We wove hearts as we waited for Christmas to come — a small ritual of connection, creativity, and warmth.
In 2018, I made a new home in Detroit with my husband, Ted Shumaker. In December 2021, we welcomed our daughter, Adelin Coco. Her birth month — right in the heart of weaving season — felt like a beautiful full circle. When I shared the craft with friends at her birthday, I was surprised to discover that no one knew it. That simple moment of curiosity and joy inspired me to bring this tradition to a new place and a new audience.
To bring Flet.Studio to life, I reached out to my dear friend and artist, Lisbet Krøll, in Copenhagen, who helped create our unique color combinations and heart designs. I’m also deeply grateful to my sister Marianne for her constant belief and encouragement, to Lindsay for reminding me of the beauty in paper art, and to Sophie for nudging me toward the simple and perfect name — flet.
Here in Detroit, I work closely with a local print house to ensure every detail — from the texture of the matte paper to the precision of each cut — honors the craftsmanship and quiet history behind every heart.
Through Flet.Studio, I’m sharing a little piece of Denmark with the world. I hope these woven hearts bring a touch of calm, creativity, and connection into your home — and maybe even into your own story.
Enjoy, Marie
